The Internet as a Dating Tool

Finding the right one could be as easy as clicking a button.

The internet, once a novelty, is now a full-fledged way of life for millions of people. People work online, play games online, and shop online, so why not find a date online too? The promise of finding love online has been advertised in print, radio, and television, and millions of people have eagerly signed up on paid dating websites, generating millions of dollars for the online dating industry. However, while love can be found online, it is important to choose reputable, safe sites.

Choosing a Site

With all of the advertised sites available, people might be overwhelmed with the amount of choices they have. However, the list gets considerably shorter if one takes into consideration the following factors: membership fee, success rate, and business longevity.

One of the most popular dating sites is Match.com. This website lists thousands of profiles from people around the United States, and the list is growing everyday. What makes Match.com unique is its six-month guarantee. If a person doesn't find a special someone within the first six months of being on the site, he or she gets the next six months free. It is free to join and browse profiles, so this way if the local dating scene on Match.com doesn't look too promising, a person can just delete their profile without paying anything.

For people who want to try online dating, but don't want to pay a fee for doing so, a popular choice has become Craigslist. This site is a one-stop kind of a site, because not only can people post an ad looking for a date, but also they can participate in discussion forums on a wide variety of topics, buy/sell things, and look for employment!

Staying Safe

Internet dating used to carry a stigma with it, but that stigma is fading as more and more people have schedules that make it hard for them to immediately meet people in real life. Unfortunately, the internet is rife with predators, so information must be safeguarded at all times. First of all, when creating a dating profile or posting an advertisement for a date, a person should not use this or her personal e-mail address. Rather, create an e-mail address specifically for any online dating correspondence.

Also, personal information, such as a home address or cell phone number, should not be displayed on any profile. Such information should only be given when the identity of a date has been proven valid, and a date has been arranged at a public location. Dating sites are becoming more adept at safeguarding membership information as well.

That being said, online dating can open a world of possibilities to people. People who would have never met otherwise have married after meeting through online dating sites. It all really has to do with making the right choices.
