Tired of looking for the right person with no success? Try using an online dating website. But make sure to follow a few of these tips and suggestions.

Online dating sites have expanded and grown by leaps and bounds over the last few years. It seems as though everyone is trying to find that special someone and they’re taking to the web to get it done. Online dating sites use sophisticated compatibility software to find appropriate matches among users, based on profiles that users create.

When using an online dating website in the pursuit of love and companionship, consider some of the following tips and suggestions to succeed and stay safe.

Choose the Appropriate Online Dating Website

There are tons of online dating sites available at the click of a mouse, so make sure to find one that is appropriate. There are general Internet dating sites such as Lavalife, Eharmony, Match.com, and Plenty of Fish, and then there are others that are suited specifically to adults, seniors, gay relationships, certain religions, ethnicities, etc. A simple Google search will come up with a list. Before making a final decision about which online dating website to use be sure that the site has a good reputation, is user-friendly, and affordable.

Fill Out an Online Dating Profile

Online dating sites will ask users to fill out a profile/questionnaire that will determine the type of matches that will be found. Be honest when filling it out. The profile and picture are what will determine who makes contact, so it’s important to create one that is fun, positive, and most importantly, representative of the unique person being profiled. Avoid being negative or generic. The idea is to stand out amongst the thousands of other online dating profiles. Consider looking at other profiles and determine what it is about them that makes them stand out.

Like it or not, looks play a part, so post a good photograph. Generic photos simply aren’t good enough. Wear a flattering color, dress nicely, portray a positive attitude, and please – have someone else take the photo. Webcam photos are a no-no. Also, remember to be as honest when posting a photo as when posting the profile. Do not post a photo that was taken 10 years ago. No one wants to face a complete surprise at the first meeting.

Online Dating and the First Date

First dates can be nerve-wracking, especially after conversing with the person online. It’s difficult to know what they’ll really be like. It’s probably best to go in expecting the person to be a bit different than they are online. Not that the person wasn’t honest, but it’s easy to craft a charming and witty email, not so easy to be spontaneously charming and witty in person. Remember, the other person is likely nervous too.

It’s entirely possible that the person won’t be as wonderful as their emails may have implied had, so keep the time for the first date short. Agree to meet for a drink or something; that way it's easy to leave if the date isn't going well, or extend the meeting if things are running smoothly.

When trying to get to know someone, ask about their life and interests, but avoid asking awkward and personal questions. Don’t grill them like they’re at a job interview. Try to find common ground, and steer the conversation towards subjects that both parties are interested in. Stay away from issues like money, politics and religion. While these things may be very important to some people, this is only a first date. Figure out if the personalities click before beginning to plan out a future together.

Sometimes attraction is instant, and sometimes it builds. First dates aren’t always indicative of where the relationship can go because people are often nervous and not completely at-ease. Consider meeting with someone two or three times before deciding if there is a connection (unless they're unpleasant of course). It's best to go with one's gut. If there's no chemistry say goodbye. If it's uncertain, give it a second chance.

Safety Tips for Online Dating

It's easy to feel close to someone after chatting online for a while, but remember, the person is still a complete stranger. Although it’s important to be honest and describe oneself accurately, it’s even more important to be cautious and not give away any really personal information. In order to keep safe when dating online, keep in mind the following guidelines:

  • Never give out home addresses, telephone numbers, credit card info, etc. When speaking on the telephone consider using a cell phone rather than a home line.
  • Never give money to anyone, no matter what his or her sob story.
  • Set up a different email account for online dating other than the one regularly used.
  • Pay very close attention when speaking to someone on a progressive basis. Watch out for inconsistencies in conversation, such as a different answer to a question that has previously been asked. Be wary of people who seem to anger easily, and those who exhibit controlling characteristics.
  • When meeting someone for the first time meet in a public place and make sure to tell people where you will be and what time you expect to be home.
  • Stick with paid online dating services.?Free online dating services provide a greater opportunity for potentially dangerous individuals. They don't ever have to provide a credit card or other information that identifies them.
  • A little research is never a bad thing. Try Googling someone to check out his or her story.
  • Trust your gut instinct.

Online dating can be a fun and rewarding activity. Just make sure to be smart. Be patient and don’t expect miracles. It can take awhile to find that perfect match, and sometimes, it simply never happens. Online dating services are great at getting people together, but they certainly don’t guarantee happily-ever-after. Enjoy conversing with those you feel physically and emotionally attracted to, and if something begins to develop, go with it.
